A Level: Art and Design (Graphics)

Component 1 & 3– Portfolio (60% of AS/A Level)

The completion of the folio involves designing and making quality products and the completion of a design folder. Through our strong links with industry, work will be related to commercial practices, learning from practicing designers, and will involve all stages of the designing and making process. Products will be made using a range of graphic media and new technologies including industry standard software to prepare you for the world of work. Areas of study include: Lettering and Typography, Packaging and Corporate Identity.

Component 2 & 4 Externally Set Assignment (40% of AS/A Level)

You will receive a paper at the beginning of February (year 12) and select one starting point (brief). Over the next 3 months, your time will be spent researching, planning and developing ideas. A further 10/15 hours of supervised time, in May, will be used to complete the production of the design outcome(s).

For all Level 3 subjects five or more GCSE’s are required at grade C including Grade 5 in Maths & English Language. All students must continue with Maths and English if they have not achieved a Grade 4. Grade 6 in Graphics or previous portfolio evidence

You could take this course with other advanced level courses such as History of Art to prepare for higher education in areas of art and design, photography, architecture or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to art and design such as an Architect, Interior or Fashion Designer. The course will also encourage you to explore your creative mind and help you develop the basic skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
