How will it be delivered and assessed?

Component 1 & 3 – Portfolio workbook & Technical Folder (60% of AS/A Level)

Students complete a workbook comprising of three sections (portraiture, abstract & performance). Each section is made up of self-directed mini projects covering; research and in-depth analysis of other photographers’ work, the design, construction and execution of photo-shoots, media experimentation and final outcomes.

Alongside this students also complete a supporting Technical Folder. Students will learn how to use a wide variety of processes , techniques and equipment associated with digital photography to help develop their project ideas through to final outcomes. Tasks include; Photoshop tutorials, use of lenses, lighting and backdrops, as well as the use of a digital SLR camera.

Final outcomes created can be quality prints, photo-books, 3D installations or even products, depending on the skills and interest of the individual.

Component 2 & 4 Externally Set Assignment (40% of AS/A Level)

Students will receive a paper at the beginning of February (year 12) and select one starting point (brief). Over the next 3 months, their time will be spent researching, planning, shooting photographs, experimenting and developing ideas.

A further 10/15 hours of supervised time, in May, will be used to complete the production of their photographic outcome(s).

Entry requirements

For all Level 3 subjects five or more GCSE’s are required at grade C including Grade 5 in Maths & English Language. All students must continue with Maths and English if they have not achieved a Grade 4. Previous Photography experience is beneficial.

You could take this course with other advanced level courses such as History of Art to prepare for higher education in areas of art and design, photography, architecture or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to art and design such as an Architect, Interior or Fashion Designer. The course will also encourage you to explore your creative mind and help you develop the basic skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
