A Level: Chemistry

Chemistry has a large practical content and much of your time is spent in the laboratory. The teaching style is quite different from the GCSE course and students are encouraged to adopt a responsible ownership of their learning, and to take advantage of the enormous Information Technology potential available at our College. As part of the course, experiences in lectures, seminars, practical laboratory work, one-to-one support, presentations and encouragement to see Chemistry in the wider economic and social context can be expected. Chemistry at Beauchamp has been a strong and successful department for many years and continues to be so.

The A-level is split into 19 topics, all of which are assessed in the final exams at the end of year 13.

1 Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table

2 Bonding and Structure

3 Redox I

4 Inorganic Chemistry a

6 grade 5s (or equivalent), including at least grade 5 in English Language or Literature.

6 or above in at least 2 Sciences, and if you're doing Triple Science one of the 6's has to be in Chemistry. Plus a 5 or above in Maths.

Chemistry occupies a pivotal position in the Sciences as it is often referred to as a central Science because it joins together Physics and Mathematics, Biology and Medicine. Chemistry at AS and A2 level will help you develop transferable skills such as communication, problem solving and analytical thinking. Potential employers value the analytical and conceptual skills that are developed during the study of Chemistry. Such skills, coupled with the ability to work in a meticulous and accurate manner, enable Chemistry students to pursue careers within, or outside, the vast area of Science. Innumerable career prospects include: anatomy, agricultural science, beauty therapy, biochemistry, biology, physics, engineering, chemistry, dentistry, food science, forestry, medicine, pathology, polymer science, veterinary science, zoology and many, many more.
