A Level: French

A-level French builds on the knowledge, understanding and skills gained at GCSE. It constitutes an integrated study with a focus on language, culture and society. It fosters a range of transferable skills including communication, critical thinking, research skills and creativity, which are valuable to the individual and society.

There are 4 modules for certification at A level:

Social issues and trends

Political and artistic culture

Grammar

Works: literary texts and films

Students will be expected to have met St Paul’s entry requirements of 2 Grade 5’s and 4 Grade 4’s. A minimum of grade 4 in English and Maths is essential for all courses. GCSE in French is essential.

French alongside other A-levels is an excellent foundation for a wide range of degree courses including Law, Linguistics, History, Ancient Languages, European Legal Studies and many more.

Language skills are in demand and can be used in almost any career, particularly in businesses that trade internationally. Roles linked to French and Modern Languages are Interpreter, Secondary school teacher, Translator, Broadcast journalist, Detective, Diplomatic service officer, English as a foreign language teacher, International aid/development worker, Logistics and distribution manager, Marketing executive, Patent examiner, Private tutor, Sales executive, Tour manager to name just a few.
