Course Summary
Why study this subject?
Students who have enjoyed studying Higher Tier Maths at GCSE and have achieved a grade 7 or above should consider studying this course. Students considering Further Maths must also study Maths A level. This provides an excellent option at A level if students are considering going on to study maths at university. Further Maths makes the transition from Sixth Form to university courses, which are maths rich, that much easier as more of the first year content will be familiar. This is a challenging qualification, which both extends and deepens understanding beyond the standard A Level Maths, and provides the opportunity to explore new and more sophisticated mathematical concepts. The course content includes: Pure Mathematics: Proof, Complex numbers, Matrices, Further Algebra and Functions, Further Calculus, Further Vectors, Polar coordinates, Hyperbolic functions, Differential equations, Trigonometry and Coordinate Geometry. Where can this subject lead?
Further Maths is now becoming an entry requirement at many universities for a widening variety of subjects. The Russell Group universities lists Further Maths as a facilitating subject. For certain subjects at university the addition of A Level Further Maths can result in a reduced offer. The skills students develop can lead on to higher education options in many areas including mathematics, physics, engineering, economics, medicine, psychology, actuary, teaching, genetics, lawyer and computer programming.
Course Details
How will it be delivered and assessed?
Three x 2 hour papers sat at the end of Year 13.
- Paper 1 - Pure Mathematics.
- Paper 2 - Pure Mathematics.
- Paper 3 - Two papers one on each of your chosen options.
There is no coursework in this A Level.
Entry requirements
Five standard passes at GCSE (at least a Grade 4). This must include at least a Grade 4 in English Language and Maths at GCSE.
Students will need to gain at least a Grade 4 in the subjects they would like to study at A Level.
Literature: requires at least a Grade 5 in English (Literature or Language).
Maths: requires at least a Grade 6 in maths.
Science Subjects:
• For those students who have studied Combined Science at least two Grade 5s will be required.
• For those students who have studied Triple Science at least two Grade 5s will be required with at least a Grade 5 in the science subject/s they wish to study at A Level.
