Course Summary

Graphic communication is a highly creative course which focuses on contemporary graphic design and the visual arts. It encourages the development of personal creativity and embraces all aspects of visual communication and experiments with a wide range of materials and techniques. These include print making, working with mixed media and presenting work creatively. The disciplines of illustration, typography and layout will be covered during the course and students are able to gain an understanding of how to create a successful marriage of all three.

A Level Graphic communication is the chance to explore new materials and techniques, creating distinctive designs and showing artistic flair.

Course Details

Skills are developed over the course of the 3 units in areas such as ICT, professional design packages, Photoshop and Illustrator are used as tools to further enhance designs. Researching artists and designers helps to inform the students of new trends in the field and inspire their own practice. Students will have the opportunity to spend a day at Leicester print workshop and visit exhibitions to see work first hand. Residential trips to London, Berlin, Rome and New York have enabled students to build on external experiences within their studies.

Yr12 Unit- Externally set task 10 hour session (01) 100%

Yr13 Units - Personal investigation (01) 60% Externally set task 15 hour session (02) 40%

Entry requirements

6 grade 5s (or equivalent), including at least a grade 5 in English Language or Literature.

5 or above in a Design/Art based subject or an interview to look at a portfolio of work.
