Course Summary
This qualification is designed to develop a greater understanding and appreciation of religious beliefs and teachings, as well as the disciplines of ethics and philosophy of religion. Learners will develop their skills of critical analysis in order to construct balanced, informed arguments and responses to religious, philosophical and ethical ideas.
Course Details
During this course students should:
- Develop an understanding and appreciation of philosophical and ethical thought and its contribution to individuals, communities and societies.
- Adopt an enquiring, critical and reflective approach to the study of Philosophy and Ethics.
- Reflect on and develop their own values, opinions and attitudes in the light of their study.
The OCR A Level RS course is divided into three key components:
- Philosophy of Religion Explore classical and modern philosophical arguments about the existence of God, the nature of religious experience, the problem of evil, and the relationship between religion and science.
- Religion and Ethics Examine ethical theories such as Utilitarianism, Kantian Ethics, and Natural Law, and apply them to contemporary moral issues like euthanasia, business ethics, and sexual ethics.
- Developments in Christian Thought Focus on Christianity, studying key theological concepts, the role of religion in society, gender and theology, and how beliefs have evolved over time.

- Component 1 (Philosophy of Religion) exam 33.3%
- Component 2 (Religion and Ethics) exam 33.3%
- Component 3 (Developments in Christian Thought) exam 33.3%
Entry requirements
For all Sixth Form courses, students must have five GCSE (or equivalent) passes at Grades 9-4, which must include Mathematics and English Language/Literature at a Grade 4 or above.
Students also require a Grade 4 in GCSE Religious Studies/Philosophy & Ethics (if taken).

Students can take this course to complement other A level courses. This could lead to Higher Education to study Philosophy, Psychology, Politics, Law, Medicine, Business, Theology, or other courses that require similar academic skills. Some students opt to go straight into employment.
