A Level: Politics

Politics is a very expansive and fascinating subject. If you are fascinated by current affairs, British politics, American politics, the laws and history of the UK, Europe and the USA then Politics could be right for you.

Unit 1 British Politics and Core Ideologies:

• Political participation and Democracy

• Electoral Systems

• Political Parties & Pressure Group & Protest Movements

• Voting behaviour and the media

• Core ideologies – Socialism, Liberalism and Conservativism •

Unit 2 British Government and Non-core Ideologies:

• Governing Modern Britain - The British Constitution, European union and devolution

• Parliament

• The Core Executive

• Relationship between the branches of government

• Non-Core Ideologies - Nationalism

Unit 3 The Government and Politics of the USA:

• The Constitution and Federalism

• US Congress

• The President and Federal Bureaucracy

• The Supreme Court and US Civil rights

• US Democracy and Participation

• Comparative approaches

3 x 2 hour exams

1. British Politics and Core Ideologies

2. British Government and Non-core Ideologies

3. The Government and Politics of the USA

6 grade 5s (or equivalent), including at least a grade 5 in English Language or Literature.

At least a 5 in the relevant subject if taken.

Politics students need to have good literacy skills.

A need to keep up with current affairs by reading newspapers is preferable.

Politics courses have been around at A Level for 30 years or more. They are well established and respected by all universities. It could lead to a career in Journalism, Law, the Police, the Civil Service, business, banking and accounting, the charity sector, think tanks and NGOs (non-governmental organisations).
