Course Summary

This two year, vocationally-focussed A Level equivalent course covers all three science specialisms of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, focussing on their application in the real world. The highly practical nature of BTEC Nationals is delivered in our well-resourced laboratories, with all specialist equipment being available to students so they can develop a high standard of practical experience throughout their studies.

Course Details

This course focuses on a range of topics across the three main science disciplines.

The first year will cover content in the following areas:

  • Biological molecules
  • Cells
  • Cellular transport and enzyme activity
  • Atomic Structure
  • Bonding and structure
  • Periodicity
  • Physical chemistry
  • Organic chemistry
  • Waves and optical fibres
  • Forces and laws of motion
  • Electrical circuits and energy transfer

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Year 1:

3 external exams for application of Biology, Chemistry and Physics with option to resit in year 2.

Year 2:

Internally assessed coursework modules on Practical skill application and contemporary issues in science.

Entry requirements

For all Sixth Form courses, students must have five GCSE (or equivalent) passes at Grades 9-4. For this course this must include Mathematics at Grade 4 or above and English Language/Literature at grade 4 or above. Students must also have EITHER a minimum of grades 4-4 in GCSE ‘Trilogy Combined Science’ OR a minimum of a grade 4 in GCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics (Separate Sciences).

If you do not select Mathematics as one of your other options it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to study Core Maths alongside Applied Science as an additional subject in Year 12.

The skills developed during this course are much sought-after by employers. Applied Science students can choose from a variety of career options, such as careers in medicine, teaching or entering another Science-related profession. The Applied science AAQ shows not only academic ability but also skills in presentation, workload management and practical application of knowledge. It is an ideal stepping stone into higher education or the workplace.
