BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma: Applied Science

This is a vocational science course worth the equivalent of two A Levels in which students will develop their practical and research skills through a variety of real-world based assignments.

You will gain an understanding of the different types of scientific industries and settings, as well as how laboratory design can vary across organisations and sectors. Students will apply their skills, knowledge and understanding to activities relevant to the human sciences pathway.

Across two years the course will cover a selection of the following topics:

• Science Fundamentals
• Laboratory Techniques
• Scientific Analysis and Reporting
• Human Physiology
• Genetics
• Control of Hazards in the Laboratory
• Human Nutrition
• Cell Biology
• Testing Consumer Products
• Drug Development
• Microbiology

Assessment will be through a combination of internal and external assessment – coursework and examination.

40% exam, 60% coursework

Minimum Entry Requirements

• All Loughborough College Sixth Form courses have minimum entry requirements of at least five GCSEs at grade C/4 or above, including English Language and Maths.

Subject Specific Entry Requirements

• Two science GCSEs at grade 4 - these can be core and additional science or any two separate science subjects.

Students usually progress to higher apprenticeships, work or university. Future study or career paths may include nursing, forensics, biochemistry, food science, zoology, nutrition, veterinary nursing, toxicology and more.
