Construction T level: Building Services Engineering - Heating Engineering and Plumbing specialism

This T Level has been developed in collaboration with building services engineering experts to meet the needs of industry and will prepare you for the workplace. You will develop an in-depth understanding of how the construction industry works, the principles of design, and the role of technology and sustainability to enable you to follow a career in heating engineering and plumbing or progress to a higher level apprenticeship or degree. You will spend 80% of your time in college learning a broad range of key theories from across the building engineering services sector plus undertake a series of in-depth practical tasks in our purpose-built workshops. You will develop your skills in heating engineering and plumbing on a 45-day industry placement with an employer to enhance understanding of the sector. The placement may be undertaken in block release, day release, or a combination of both. We will support you to find the best placement to suit you. If you are not quite ready for a T level but want to get on the path to your chosen career, then a Transition Programme could be for you. It will help to get you ready for the T level the following year.

You will learn a broad range of core skills including practical skills from across the whole sector as well as for your main chosen specialism of plumbing and central heating engineering, this will give you a breadth of knowledge and transferable core skills. Over the two years, you will cover health and safety, science, design, construction and the built environment, industry, sustainability, measurement, building technology, information and data, relationship management, digital technology, and commercial/business. In the second year, you will focus on skills specific to heating engineering and plumbing working towards the following performance outcomes: - Installing central heating and plumbing systems (including, plumbing hot and cold water systems, drainage, and Central heating systems) - Commissioning heating and plumbing systems - Maintaining heating and plumbing systems - Decommissioning heating and plumbing systems You will work on an employer set project during your industry placement to give you hands-on experience and put the theory you have learned into practice as well as developing invaluable workplace skills such as communication skills, teamwork, and problem-solving. English, maths, a subject related Science and digital skills relevant to Building Services Engineering will be integrated throughout the course and you must achieve a level 2 in English and maths as a minimum exit requirement.

You will be assessed via a variety of formal methods during your course plus assessments such as external exams, controlled assessments, an employer-led set project, and summarise your learning through practical assignments. This will generate an overall grade of pass, merit, distinction, or distinction*. You will be awarded a nationally recognised certificate which will show a breakdown of what you have achieved and can be worth up to 168 UCAS points.

T levels are for people who are 16-18 on 31 August on the date that they start the course Standard entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate a minimum of 90% attendance at your last place of work or study. A GCSE in both English and maths at grade 4 or above or Functional Skills in both English and maths at Level 2, plus two other GCSE's at grade 4 or above including science and a design technology based related subject. All students will undertake a probationary period for the first six weeks of their programme. During this time, attendance and timekeeping, attitude, attainment and application towards study will be monitored. A final decision as to the most appropriate level of study and the outcome will be discussed with you towards the end of your probationary period. If you don't meet these but want to start on your chosen career path entry requirements for Transition Programmes are slightly lower. You will need: GCSE in both English and maths, grade 3 or above, plus a further two GCSEs at grade 3 or above, one of which must include a science or technical based subject. Students previously studying at the college will need to have attained a Level 1 Diploma in Electrical, plus English and maths at grade 3 or equivalent Functional Skills.

On successful completion of all elements of your programme you will gain a T Level in Construction: Building Services Engineering and be qualified to progress straight to a career in Plumbing and Central Heating Engineering or continue to an apprenticeship/higher level apprenticeship or degree.
