Course Summary

This course is an excellent choice for anyone interested in a career in Health or Social Care. It provides consistency with larger courses, and has been designed so that mandatory units can be ‘topped up’ to make a larger size course at a later date if desired.

Skills developed

In the BTEC National units there are opportunities during the teaching and learning phase to give learners practice in developing employability skills under these three main categories:

  • cognitive and problem-solving skills: use critical thinking, approach non-routine problems applying expert and creative solutions, use systems and technology
  • intrapersonal skills: communicating, working collaboratively, negotiating and influencing, self-presentation
  • interpersonal skills: self-management, adaptability and resilience, self-monitoring and development.

Advice to Parents

There is a revision guide and a workbook to accompany the course which we highly recommend students buy. Students need to be organised and keep up to date with their work, this may involve work at home or outside of lessons.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

The majority of the course is assessed through internal assessments created by the teachers. There will also be an element of external assessment in the mandatory units; the externally assessed units are common across the sizes, so students won’t need to re-take any assessments if they top up to a larger course.

Units include:
Unit 1: Human Lifespan Development
Unit 2: Working in Health and Social Care
Unit 5: Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs
Unit 11: Psychological Perspectives
