Course Summary

The Pearson BTEC Level 1 Introductory Diploma in Engineering is designed around practical skills and tasks that place an emphasis on learners demonstrating what they can do rather than what they know in theory. The qualifications give learners the opportunity to acquire and develop generic, transferable and sector-specific skills in order to complete tasks and demonstrate a level of achievement that enables them to progress to further learning. Starting with the basics of electronics, mechanical and manufacturing engineering you will learn about all the theory and practical aspects of this exciting industry. All students will undertake a probationary period for the first six weeks of their programme. During this time, attendance, attitude, attainment and application towards study will be monitored. A final decision as to the most appropriate level and outcome will be discussed with you towards the end of your probationary period. If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven't already achieved a grade 4 (C) or above. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme.

Course Details

Your studies will be divided between the practical application of skills and learning the basic theories for each area of engineering including the construction and fault finding of electronic circuits, using hand tools and machining processes to manufacture products and components. Learners will not develop all the knowledge and skills needed to enter the labour market in a given sector but will develop pre-employability skills and contextualised knowledge to allow them to progress to further learning and training and, ultimately, to become successful in their chosen sector. A large part of your time will be dedicated to practical workshop sessions where you will develop skills in team-work, problem-solving, independent working and timekeeping skills. Topics covered include: 1. Manufacturing an engineered product using both hand tools and machining processes 2. Constructing electronic circuits 3. Computer-aided design.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

You will be assessed through your practical ability in mechanical and electronics workshops, written tests, assignments and examinations for Functional Skills/ GCSE's.

Entry requirements

Entry to this course requires GCSEs in both English and maths, one of which must be at grade 3 or above, plus a further two GCSEs at grade 2 or above, one of which would ideally include a science or technical based subject. You will also need to provide one reference and it is desirable that you can demonstrate a minimum of 90% attendance in your last place of study or work.

On successful completion of your level 1 Study Programme, you will be able to specialise further in one of our level 2 programmes, such as Automotive Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or Electrical/Electronic Engineering subject to meeting the entry criteria. Further advice and guidance will be given during the academic year. Alternatively, you may seek an apprenticeship with local businesses or apply for apprenticeships via the college website. This course offers the first step in preparing learners for entry into careers such as technicians or junior engineers in a wide variety of roles within different sectors of the engineering industry.
