Why study this subject?
This qualification is great if you want a practical course alongside your A Levels or other Level 3s. You’ll apply your learning to real-life health and social care situations, preparing you for university or future careers.
You’ll develop skills in:
• Person-centred care and support.
• Giving advice and guidance.
• Creating proposals and health plans.
• Tackling public health challenges.
As well as transferable skills like communication, teamwork, research, problem-solving and critical thinking – essential for higher education and the workplace.
This course complements A Levels and other Level 3 subjects such as Applied Science, Biology, Child Development, Law, Psychology, Sociology and Sport. Where can this course lead?
Students completing Health and Social Care often go on to university to study nursing, childcare studies or other Social Science degrees. This is a useful qualification for those interested in a career in the health and social care sector, including midwifery, nursing, health visitor and social worker.

The foundations of health and social care, including: • Equality, diversity and rights. • Health and safety, and managing risks. • Key legislation. • Best practice in care settings.
F094: Supporting People with Long-Term Physiological Conditions (assignment)
Study a range of long-term conditions, their causes, effects and treatments. Conduct your own research into local services and present ideas for improving support.
F091: Anatomy and Physiology for Health and Social Care (exam)- 1hr 30mins
Understand how the body and systems support health. Explore conditions, treatments and impacts on daily life. Topics include Cardiovascular, Respiratory, Digestive, Musculoskeletal, Control, Regulatory & Reproductive systems.
F095: Investigating Public Health (assignment)
Understand public health and the importance of a healthy society. Research a current public health challenge and propose a realistic approach to improve it.
F092: Person-Centred Approach to Care (assignment)
Discover the principles and values behind person-centred care. Learn how to communicate effectively, build relationships, overcome barriers and design outline care plans tailored to individuals.
F096: Supporting People in Relation to Sexual Health, Pregnancy and Postnatal Health (assignment)
Learn about sexual health, consent, contraception, pregnancy, birth and postnatal care. Develop skills in giving sensitive, personalised advice and guidance.
F093: Supporting People with Mental Health Conditions (assignment)
Explore what mental health means, different conditions and how they affect people’s lives. Learn about available treatments, services and ways to promote wellbeing.
F097: Supporting Healthy Nutrition and Lifestyles (assignment)
Explore dietary and activity needs, nutrition guidelines and barriers to healthy eating. Learn to plan balanced meals and support individuals different nutritional needs.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
Entry requirements
To join the Sixth Form there is an entry criteria of five standard passes at GCSE (at least a Grade 4). This must include at least a Grade 4 in English Language and Maths at GCSE. Students will need to gain at least a Grade 4 in the subjects they would like to study at A Level. There are additional grade requirements in some subjects.
Your next steps...
The Level 3 Extended Certificate will lead to degree courses in associated areas. Students could alternatively go into employment in a Health, Social Care and Early Years care related.
The skills and knowledge gained will support progression to university courses such as Nursing, Midwifery, Health and Social Care, Health Sciences, Paramedic Science, Public Health and Wellbeing, and Social Work. areas.
