Course Summary

This course is designed to offer progression from the level 2 diploma in site carpentry/Technical certificate in site carpentry. The site carpentry advanced technical diploma level 3 is for students who are interested in developing the specific technical and professional skills that will lead to meaningful employment in the construction industry. Students undertaking the site carpentry course will explore a wide range of carpentry techniques that includes constructing cut roofing, fitting doors and windows and fixing stairs with turns. You must supply safety footwear/clothing and an identified tool kit. Technical drawing equipment and stationery are also necessary. If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven't already achieved a grade 4 or above. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme.

Course Details

This is an Advanced Technical Diploma. Students on the site carpentry advanced technical diploma level 3 course will study theoretical aspects of the subject and apply them to practical tasks. Compulsory topics include: Principles of organising, planning and pricing construction work; constructing cut roofing; fitting doors and windows and their furnishings; fixing stairs with turns; principles of maintenance and repair; set up and use fixed and transportable machinery

How will it be delivered and assessed?

To gain this qualification, candidates must successfully achieve the following City Guilds assessments: one externally set, externally moderated assignment (practical assessment) one externally set, externally marked exam, sat under examination conditions There is also an employer involvement element to this qualification that is required in order to achieve the Advanced Technical Diploma.

Entry requirements

Entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate a minimum of 90% attendance at your last place of work or study. GCSEs in both English and maths at grade 4 or above plus two other GCSEs, are required, one of which must be a technology/design-based subject. You will need to have successfully completed an appropriate level 2 Site Carpentry study programme. Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19 who hold a formal English and maths qualification at Level 2 minimum and must have previously successfully completed a level 2 Site Carpentry programme.

This qualification helps further prepare you for work in the construction industry specialising in Site Carpentry. Progression from the Level 3 course would generally be through entering the world of work via an apprenticeship programme or Full-Time employment in the Site Carpentry sector.
