WJEC Level 3: Applied Diploma in Criminology

On the Level 3 Criminology course, you’ll learn about all aspects of crime from a social perspective: the causes of crime, its social impact and take a look into the criminals that are committing these acts. Criminologist study crime in an attempt to better understand what motivates the criminal to act in that way.

In Year 12 you will achieve the Level 3 Applied Certificate in Criminology and by the end of Year 13 you will have achieved the Level 3 Applied Diploma in Criminology which is equivalent to one A Level.

Applied Certificate – Year 12

• Unit 1: Changing Awareness of Crime – Internally assessed (Coursework)
• Unit 2: Criminological Theories – Externally assessed (Exam)

Applied Diploma – Year 13

• Unit 3: Crime Scene to Court Room – Internally assessed (Coursework)
• Unit 4: Crime and Punishment – Externally assessed (Exam)

This is predominantly an essay-based subject so English skills will be developed throughout the course, especially using key terminology and looking at improving academic writing skills. Maths and employability skills would be developed in this subject where appropriate alongside developing higher-level thinking skills and critical analysis.

There will also be a visit to Derby University to explore their Law Court and a Crime Laboratory. You will also attend Nottingham Court for a visit (subject to Government guidelines).

In both Year 12 and Year 13 there is on internally assessed unit (NEA/coursework) and one exam.

Minimum Entry Requirements

• All Loughborough College Sixth Form courses have minimum entry requirements of at least five GCSEs at grade C/4 or above, including English Language and Maths.

Subject Specific Entry Requirements

• English Language at grade 5.

You can progress onto degree courses at many universities such as Criminology, Law, Sociology and Policing and Criminal Justice.

Long term, the qualification develops your understanding and skills so that you are able to consider employment in the criminal justice sector, such as in Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service, the Courts and Tribunals Service and the Police Service.
