A Level Business Studies Exam Board: Edexcel

Why study this subject?

Business A Level focuses on understanding the sorts of issues that organisations face then applying these factors to real world cases and make recommendations as to what approach the business should take to achieve its objectives. This problem solving approach to business helps students understand the nature and working of business organisations. The aim is to encourage students to develop a critical understanding of different businesses, the context in which they operate, the markets they serve, and ultimately recommend actions that businesses should take to be successful. Students will be expected to immerse themselves in a business-like mind-set and to pay attention to the world around them. For example, students would be expected to take note of relevant news items, which may be used as a basis for discussion and class-work.

How is the course assessed?

Paper 1:

Business 1 33.3% 2 hour written exam 100 Marks Section A = 15 Multi Choice Questions Section B = short answer questions (35 marks) Section C = essay (25 marks) Section D = essay (25 marks)

Paper 2:

Business 2 33.3% 2 hour written exam 100 Marks 3 data response questions (compulsory) worth around 33 marks each consisting of 3 or 4 part questions

Paper 3:

Business 3 33.3% 2 hour written exam 100 Marks One case study

Followed by c.6 questions

Where can this subject lead?

Students of Business will find the skills used lend themselves to further studies in Business, Finance and Marketing. Students will find their studies will be relevant in almost all sectors in a range of professions and industries.

Students will take a problem solving approach to business to help them understand the nature and workings of a business organisation. The aim is to encourage students to develop a critical understanding of different businesses, the context in which they operate, the markets they serve, and ultimatley recommend actions that businesses should take to be successful.

Students will sit 3 exams:

Paper 1: Business 1

Paper 2: Business 2

Paper 3: Business 3 (to include a case study)

To join the Sixth Form there is an entry criteria of five standard passes at GCSE (at least a Grade 4). This must include at least a Grade 4 in English Language and Maths at GCSE. Students will need to gain at least a Grade 4 in the subjects they would like to study at A Level.
