Why study this subject?
The ability to communicate in a foreign language is a real asset in our increasingly global world.
Studying French at A-Level will give you the opportunity to pursue your studies at a higher level at university or to use the skills you acquire to enhance your CV and employment prospects in a range of careers.
You will improve all the language skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating through a variety of classroom-based and independent learning activities, whilst acquiring a thorough understanding of French grammar.
Course Details
You will study themes covering social, cultural, political and artistic topics in France and in the French-speaking world. This will include the study of a film ("La haine") and a work of literature ("Un sac de billes"). As part of the speaking assessment, you will undertake an independent research project where you will study an area of personal interest related to French-speaking countries.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
The two final written exams will include listening and reading comprehension, translation into English and into French and essays on film and literature. There will also be a separate speaking test.
Entry requirements
To join the Sixth Form there is an entry criteria of five standard passes at GCSE (at least a Grade 4). This must include at least a Grade 4 in English Language and Maths at GCSE. Students will need to gain at least a Grade 4 in the subjects they would like to study at A Level.
French Grade 7 or above in French at GCSE. A student with a Grade 6 will be considered on an individual basis.

Where can this subject lead?
A language can be combined with almost any other subject (popular choices are law, history or business) at university. Language graduates are sought after within many areas of employment, as language qualifications showcase your communication skills and linguistic abilities and attest to your interest in global issues. Students can also progress directly into employment or apply for a level 4 apprenticeship.
