Course Summary

Studying A-level Politics will provide insight into political beliefs central to an understanding of the modern world. It also develops analytical and evaluative skills in relation to interesting topics prevalent in the turbulent political climate of today.

A-Level Politics will develop your understanding of structures of authority and power, how political systems differ, and enable you to interpret, evaluate and comment on the nature of politics and government. You will also develop a range of transferable analytical, debating and communication skills.

Course Details

In this course you will study the way in which people become engaged in political issues and developments occurring within the UK and the USA. The course reflects a truly modern and evolving political environment. Politics is a living and breathing subject, with new examples occurring constantly.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Examination Board: Edexcel (9PL0)

3 papers:

Paper 1 – UK Politics and core political ideas – 2hour exam (33.3%)

Paper 2 – UK government and non-core political ideas – 2-hour exam (33.3%)

Paper 3 – Comparative politics, government and politics of the USA - 2-hour exam (33.3%)

All exams consist mainly of essay-based questions.

Entry requirements

Students will be expected to have met St Paul’s entry requirements of 2 Grade 5’s and 4 Grade 4’s. A minimum of grade 4 in English and Maths is essential for all courses.
