Course Summary

Our Level 3 VRQ Diploma in Beauty Therapy techniques course aims to provide you with a range of specialist practical skills such as massage techniques, facial and body electrical treatments as well as massage using pre-blended aromatherapy oils and stone therapy massage. You will benefit from developing your technical knowledge in areas such as anatomy and physiology, communication, and selling skills. We have excellent facilities and you will be taught by qualified and experienced staff. This course will equip you to seek employment or further training within the beauty therapy industry. This course is an approximate split of 60% practical and 40% theory. There is a large amount of science-based knowledge that is needed to be learnt and understood in order to complete practical treatments and pass this qualification. You will be required to purchase the level 3 uniform and kit and adhere to the strict dress code required in our salons. Additionally, home study will also be needed (approximately 5-6 hours per week) to support your learning. If you are aged 16 to 18, you will be enrolled on a study programme. This will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven't already achieved a grade 4 or above. You will take part in activities that help you to develop your personal skills, such as building your character and confidence. This will help you to live well and move into your chosen career. If you are 16-19 years old these activities will be timetabled as will work experience and placement. You can also choose to take part in other activities. For other age groups, activities will be tailored to your needs.

Course Details

This qualification covers a very wide range of practical skills and knowledge required for working in the beauty and spa therapy industry. This includes promoting and selling products and services to clients, providing body massage, providing facial electrotherapy treatments, providing body electrotherapy treatments, anatomy, and physiology, provide massage using pre-blended aromatherapy oils and hot stone therapy massage. All of the units learnt in this qualification will have a theory and practical element to learn and understand. How will it be delivered and assessed?

To gain this qualification you must successfully achieve the following assessments: Online theory exams and practical assessments for each unit, which you will carry out in the college salon. The typical exam brief will require candidates to provide a variety of beauty services to a number of clients within a commercially viable time. This will require students to use consultation techniques to identify client requirements and build a professional rapport. Candidates who fail any theory or practical assessments will have the opportunity to resit them. These resits could incur a charge.

Entry requirements

To enrol onto this course, you must have passed a full Level 2 Beauty Therapy qualification. Additionally, you must have above 90% attendance at previous college/work, a positive reference from college/work, and GCSEs in English and maths at grade 4 (C) or alternatively Functional Skills at level 2. Excellent communication skills are also desirable. The ability to complete at least 30 hours of work experience within the course period (a job in the industry or related would assist with this). You will need to purchase the Leicester College uniform and kit (costs below) in addition to this you must wear black flat unbranded closed in shoes (no trainers), hair to be tied up away from the face, no jewellery or piercings and nails are to be short and natural i.e. no gel, false nails or varnish.

You could progress into employment such as beauty salons, spas, cruise ships, retail for cosmetic companies, salon owner, mobile therapist, skin clinics, working for a cosmetic company or training/teaching within the industry. Higher Education courses in advanced techniques or management is also another progression route. All beauty therapists should ensure that they carry out continuous professional development throughout their career.
