If you work best through practical investigation and enjoy learning about how things work. If you are interested in how science affects the world around you and how it is used in the workplace and industry. Then the Applied Science BTEC course may be the right choice for you. By developing your knowledge in the three main disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics through the Applied Science course, you will gain a thorough understanding of scientific knowledge within a vocational context.
The BTEC National Extended Certificate in Applied Science (AAQ) is for students seeking an A-level standard science qualification who wish to continue their education through applied learning and who aim to progress to higher education or apprenticeships and ultimately employment in the applied science sector.
Course Details
Principles and Applications of Biology: Structure and function of cells and tissues, structure and function of biological molecules, cellular transport and enzyme activity
Principles and applications of Chemistry: Atomic and electronic structure, bonding and structure, periodicity, physical chemistry, organic chemistry
Principle and applications of Physics: Waves and optical fibres, forces in transportation and Newton’s Laws of Motion, electrical circuits and the transfer of energy
Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques: practical applications across the sciences, including chromatography, colorimetry and electrical circuits.
Scientific investigation skills: investigative research, including planning, data collection, analysis and evaluation.

• Unit 1 (60 Credits): External Exam (60 min exam – Jan/June)

• Unit 4 (90 Credits): Assignments (Internal submission)

Entry requirements
Students will be expected to have met St Paul’s entry requirements of 2 Grade 5’s and 4 Grade 4’s. A minimum of grade 4 in English and Maths is essential for all courses.
