GCSE English Language (Foundation)

This course uses research on language learning to build your basic English skills. You will read interesting texts and take part in discussions. You will improve your vocabulary and learn tricks to make your writing better. Personalised feedback will be delivered in small group sessions. By the end of the first year, you will have progressed from a grade 2 to a grade 3.

Following on from this year we expect that you will move onto the Fast Track GCSE course aimed at supporting your progress from a GCSE grade 3 to a minimum grade 4.

By the end of the second year, you will have achieved a grade 4. Particularly motivated students are capable of passing in one year.

The WJEC/Eduqas GCSE qualification consists of two exams and an unweighted spoken language assessment.

Component 1 is worth 40% of your mark and requires you to respond to a modern literary fiction text. You must demonstrate your ability to identify details, analyse language, and express your views. You will also produce a 500-word piece of creative personal writing.

Component 2 is worth 60% of your mark and requires you to respond to two nonfiction texts: one modern, and one from the 1800s. The reading questions are similar to the first paper, but with an additional comparison question. You will also write two transactional/persuasive pieces (a letter, an article, a review, a speech…)

Your spoken language assessment will be a presentation delivered to a few of your peers during a designated small group session.

Grade D/3 at GCSE English/English Language or a Pass in Functional Skills English at Level 2.

Achievement of GCSE English Language is a requirement for progression to higher level study. It is also one of the main indicators for employers when assessing a job applicant’s language, literacy and communication skills.
