GCSE Maths (Fast Track)

This is an intensive one year re-sit course aimed at students who have previously taken a similar course in school and have not been successful in gaining a grade 4/C, but who have shown the potential to do so with some extra teaching. GCSE Maths is taken alongside the student’s main programme of study. . This new GCSE course is currently being completed at most secondary schools over a 3 year period, but we will have the challenge of reaching a grade 4 within just one year. This therefore means that time is precious and attitude to work is crucial; students will need to be motivated, proactive and dedicated to working hard throughout the course.

Students will need a full Maths set and a scientific calculator (these can be purchased from the college, if required). Students are supportive and collaborative in the classroom and help one another to build confidence through discussions, explanations and demonstrations to become more able mathematicians.

The new GCSE has an increased focus on problem solving, proportion and ratio. Throughout the course we aim to find the gaps and fill them, whilst revising all other topics regularly and embedding calculator skills and exam technique.

There are 4.5 hours (3x1.5hr) of lessons per week with additional workshops available which are open to all students and allow individuals to work in a supervised and supported environment with a teacher on a one-to-one basis.

There are three final exams; one non-calculator and two calculator papers. Students will take the Foundation tier where the highest grade that can be achieved is a grade 5. Each paper is worth 80 marks and runs for one and a half hours. A all three exams will be at the end of the academic year and l cover the full range of curriculum areas.

GCSE Maths grade 3/ D

For many progression routes, GCSE Maths (grade 4/C) is required. It is recommended that students research specific courses at their desired institutions/universities to ensure they hold the required entry qualifications.
