Course Summary
This course allows you to continue developing your Science skills through a varied range of topics covering Physics, Chemistry and Biology. You will develop knowledge and understanding of some key concepts in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, and be able to apply these to real life situations. Study will include practical work, note taking, presentations, class discussion and tutorials. Access to a computer will help with research and portfolio completion. We will use visits where this can support your learning.
The course offers opportunities for students to take part in field visits and collaborative work with local universities looking at microbiological and chemical techniques with the chance to use the specialist instruments. The local research organisation laboratory carry out scientific investigations at the College giving the students an insight into the practicals conducted in industry.
Course Details
1st Year : Foundation Diploma (Equivalent to 1.5 A Levels)
2nd Year : Extended Diploma (Equivalent to 3 A Levels)
How will it be delivered and assessed?
Assessment of Foundation Diploma
6 units assessed by a combination of internally marked assignments and external exams.
Mandatory units include: Principles and applications of science 1, Practical scientific Procedures and techniques, Science investigation skills, laboratory techniques and their application. Two further optional units in biology and/or chemistry will also be completed through internally marked assignments.
Assessment of Extended Diploma
A further 7 units to be completed, following a similar structure to the year 1 programme. Assessment will again be through externally marked exams and internally marked assignments.
Mandatory units include: Principles and applications of science 2, Investigative project, Contemporary issues in science. A further 4 optional units in biology, chemistry and physics will be assessed through internally marked assignments.
Entry requirements
5 or more GCSE’s at grade A*-C/9-4 including
English and Maths at grade C/5 (may consider C/4) and
Grade 444 or above in separate sciences or
Grade 44 or above in combined science or,
Level 2 vocational course in science with at least M, M.

Students who complete the level 3 programme have successfully secured offers from universities in medical, pharmaceutical, biochemical courses leading onto employment in a scientific field.
