Course Summary
The Core Maths course is designed for students who have had success in GCSE Maths and wish to develop their mathematical knowledge further or give support to other A Level subjects, without committing to a full A Level in Maths. It offers students the opportunity to build their knowledge to level 3, with a focus on the use and application of mathematics and statistics. A wide variety of teaching methods are used including the use of interactive whiteboards and formal teaching. The course to develop students’ mathematical skills and thinking and supports courses such as A level Psychology, Sciences and Business. Topics covered in the course include Analysis of Data, Maths for Personal Finance and Estimation. The course also covers some statistical topics including probability, correlation and regression and the normal distribution.
Course Details
All Maths students participate in a variety of enrichment activities. For example, each year a large number of students take part in the UKMT Senior Mathematics Challenge and there are opportunities for students to participate in Maths orientated workshops and taster sessions at local universities.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
Assessment of Core Maths is by exam at the end of two years.
Entry requirements
5 GCSEs at grade A*-C/9-5 including Grade C/4 or above in English Language and Grade C/4 or above in Maths.
