Course Summary
Why study this subject?
Physics is the study of energy and matter and the interaction between the two. Students will develop a broad range of analytical and experimental skills as they try to answer fundamental questions about the mechanics of the universe.. Physics students will gain an insight into the applications of science in engineering, astronomy and medicine in the form of practical skills and problem solving techniques.
Where can this subject lead?
Physics provides students with a wealth of theoretical and experimental experience, as well as mathematical applications to a variety of physical scenarios. Many students choose to apply for science-based courses at university where their physics background will provide opportunities to study any science at a higher level, including engineering, civil engineering, medicine, astronomy, construction, and aviation. An increasing number of students are looking at higher level and degree level apprenticeships in industries such as mechanical engineering.
Course Details
Modelling Physics: Assesses understanding of practical skills, foundations of physics, forces and motion and Newtonian World and astrophysics, through multiple choice questions, short answer question styles and extended responses.
Exploring Physics: Assesses understanding of practical skills, foundations of physics, electrons, waves and photons, and particles and medical physics, through multiple choice questions, short answer question styles and extended responses.
Unified Physics: Assesses all topics from the course through short answer question styles and extended responses.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
Entry requirements
To join the Sixth Form there is an entry criteria of five standard passes at GCSE (at least a Grade 4). This must include at least a Grade 4 in English Language and Maths at GCSE. Students will need to gain at least a Grade 4 in the subjects they would like to study at A Level.
Additional Specific Subject Requirements:
Physics A grade 6 or above in Maths plus a grade 6 or above in two Sciences, one of which must be Physics.
Your next steps...
Studying Physics is essential for those who want to follow Physics, Astronomy, Space Science and other related courses. It is also essential for the majority of engineering courses. An A Level in Physics will impress most employers and admissions tutors as it is recognised as a hard A Level which requires students to be highly numerate, be able to deal with complex abstract ideas and to be able to communicate effectively as well as solve problems. Physic graduates are highly sort after by the Banking and Finance as a result of their numeracy and their ability to think in the abstract. Understanding how the universe functions will never be a waste, we live in an increasingly scientific and technological environment. Studying Physics will help you form your own opinions on the issues that matter.
