Course Summary

Sometimes referred to as the 'central science', Chemistry helps to connect physical sciences, like Maths and Physics, with applied sciences, such as Biology, Medicine and Engineering. A-level Chemistry studies the material world and helps us explain everything from why a cake rises when placed in the oven to how plastics are made. Chemistry will continue to be at the forefront of responding to the needs of society, with chemists central to making advances in designing new materials, developing means for more efficient energy use and discovering new drugs, to name but a few.

Course Details

Within the AQA specification, topics fall into three main categories: physical Chemistry – kinetics and thermodynamics, inorganic Chemistry – the elements and how they react and organic Chemistry – carbon and the molecules made from carbon.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

The AQA A-level Chemistry course is a linear course with three written examinations at the end of year 13. In addition, a separate endorsement of practical skills is taken alongside the A-level. This takes the form of a minimum of 12 practical activities which are assessed by teachers based on direct observation of students’ competencies in a range of skills.

Entry requirements

General entry requirements, plus 6/6 in higher tier Combined Science or 6 in two single science GCSEs, including Chemistry. GCSE Maths grade 6.
