Course Summary

This course is aimed at those who enjoy creative subjects and wish to start a career in media, photography, journalism or film, and want to gain a qualification equivalent to four GCSEs grade 4 or above. Our established digital media department offers this course aimed at those who are interested in photography and media. It is a practical course and requires creative talent and a committed attitude. There is a strong emphasis on research, development, and evaluation. The course is a one-year full-time programme that leads to entry onto our range of level 3 Creative Media, TV and Film or Photography qualifications. This qualification is equivalent to x4 GCSEs grade 4. If you are re sitting GCSE English and Maths or equivalent you could be studying up to 6 GCSE equivalent on this single year study programme. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme.

Course Details

The modules in year 1 include the following: film, photography, digital editing, digital design software, personal development, and a creative project. The first two terms deal with investigation, communication, practical skills, and production in the creative specialist media and photographic areas, plus personal development. In the final term you will progress your creative skills through the development and production of an extended response to a creative brief - here you apply the skills you have developed throughout the programme to produce a proposal and practical response to the set creative project. Learners taking this qualification study four units: - A1 Skills Development - A2 Creative Media Project - B1 Personal Development - C1 Responding to a Creative Brief The modules in year 1 include the following: film, photography, digital editing, digital design software, personal development, and a creative project. How will it be delivered and assessed?

All units are assessed through practical assignments. You will receive regular assessments and feedback that will inform you of the grade you are working towards. We will set targets that provide guidance on how to improve your work.

Entry requirements

You will requirea minimum of three GCSEs at grade 3, one must be in a design or media GCSE related subject, one in English (literature or language), and one other. Maths grade 3 is desirable. You will also require a portfolio which demonstrates your suitability for your chosen course. If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths, if you haven't already achieved a grade 4 or above.

Your next steps...

The successful completion of this course provides access to all our BTEC level 3 Diploma/Extended Diploma in Creative Media Practice or Photography (these are equivalent to three A levels). You will also be equipped with the skills and relevant knowledge to undertake junior roles within the art and design industry. You will be required to achieve a grade 4 or equivalent in English or maths to progress to a level 3 qualification the following academic year.
