Course Summary

Our level 3 Diploma in Fashion, Theatre and Media Hair and Make-up Studies is a creative programme that mixes both the theory and practical skills needed for a career in the make-up industry and is fantastic for those who are interested in this industry. Ideal for those with a level 2 in Hair and Media makeup artistry, this course will teach you media hair and make-up skills in fashion, theatre, and special effects to help you build your professional portfolio and progress into employment. In addition to your learning, you will have the opportunity to enrich your knowledge by participating in masterclasses, trips, and collaboration with art departments.

Course Details

This qualification is comprised of all the required elements to work effectively as a make-up artist including airbrush make-up for the face, camouflage make-up, fashion and photographic make-up and media make-up. The programme consists of the following topics: - Fashion and photographic make-up - Apply airbrush makeup to the face and body - Camouflage make-up - Creative hairdressing design skills - Style and dress hair using a variety of techniques - Media make-up (including character make-up, ageing and special effects) - Design and apply face and body art You will also be required to complete 30 hours of external work experience and an employer involvement programme. If you are 16-19 years old these activities will be timetabled as will work experience and placement. You can also choose to take part in other activities. For other age groups, activities will be tailored to your needs. How will it be delivered and assessed?

This course is an approximate split of 60% practical and 40% theory. There is health and safety and industry-based knowledge that needs to be learned and understood in order to complete practical treatments and pass this qualification. You will be assessed through a range of practical assessment techniques, observations, assignments and online mutiple choice unit tests.

Entry requirements

It is desirable that you can demonstrate good attendance. A GCSE in both Englishat grade 4 (C) and maths at grade 4 (desirable) or above is required and you must hold a level 2 equivalent qualification in a related subject, such as make-up, beauty or hairdressing. Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19 who do not hold formal English and Maths qualifications.

Your next steps...

This qualification will allow you to progress onto a higher education qualification in makeup artistry, such as our DMU Level 5 Foundation Degree in Artistic Make-up Special Effects. This qualification could lead to a job as a make-up artist working in one of the following establishments: photographic studios, department stores, make-up stores, salons or you could also work as a freelance make-up artist, photographic make-up artist, editorial make-up artist, T.V make-up artist, video make-up artist, and specialist bridal make-up artist.
