Course Summary

Ever wondered why human societies are characterised by gross inequality rather than equality, or why women tend to take the premier responsibility for childcare, even when they are working full time, or why people choose to believe in a god or gods even though there is no scientific proof, or why we can never seem to get rid of crime despite the efforts of thousands of people? If you have and you want answers to other questions about human life, and human societies you might consider taking A Level Sociology.

Sociology involves studying human social life, groups and societies in a systematic way. Sociologists investigate and attempt to explain the social world and our behaviour in it. They are particularly interested in understanding the ways in which society influences us and shapes our daily lives. However, be prepared to be challenged, sociologists fundamentally disagree on nearly every issue and the subject is characterised by intensive debate and perspective rivalry.

You will explore a variety of current issues in society such as our culture and our identity and where it comes from, the purpose and role of the education system, the nature of religious beliefs, crime and deviance, as well as finding out about sociological research and the methods that sociologists use to carry it out.
