Course Summary
The course builds upon concepts and practical skills developed in GCSE Biology, using theory and practical investigations to explore the following topics:
Biological Molecules
Cells
Organisms exchange substances with their environment
Genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms
Energy transfers in and between organisms
Organisms respond to changes in their environment
Genetics, populations and ecosystems
The control of gene expression
The knowledge, skills and understanding gained through the study of A- level Biology opens many career pathways and links to university courses.
Course Details
The course allows you to build on concepts and practical skills developed at GCSE with several practical investigations throughout the year. Topics to include Energy transfer in and between organisms, Homeostasis, control of gene expression
How will it be delivered and assessed?
The Biology department will enter students for the AS qualification as well as the A-level.
AS – 2 written papers each 1 hour 30 minutes
A level – 3 written papers each 2 hours
Entry requirements
Students studying GCSE Combined Science need to have achieved a minimum Grade 6-6. Students studying GCSE Separate Sciences need at least two Grade 6s and a Grade 5 (with one of the 6s being in Biology). Students also need to have achieved a Grade 6 in Maths.

A-level Biologists can take degree courses in the following areas: Biology, Psychology, Sport and Exercise Science, Medicine and Anatomy. With further training, you could go into a job related to Biology or one of the other sciences such as a Doctor, Nurse, Scientist or Marine Biologist.
