Course Summary

Further mathematics is a course designed for those with a particular interest in mathematics who wish to develop their skills beyond those offered in the A-Level mathematics course. The content is designed to stretch highly-able pupils who will then be able to use their deeper and broader mathematical knowledge as they transition into further studies in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM).

Course Details

In further mathematics a small selection of the new topics learned include:

• Complex numbers – a tool for solving previously unsolvable quadratic equations

• Polar coordinates – a way of writing coordinates that involve angles and distances

• Matrices – arrays of numbers which are a powerful tool in algebra and geometry

• Algorithms for sorting numbers – finding shortest routes between places and the simplest ways to connect things together

• Kinematics – a series of techniques to help us better understand the movement of objects.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Assessed by end of course exams titled Core Pure Mathematics, Further Mechanics 1 and Decision 1.

Entry requirements

Grade 7 in GCSE Maths and choosing Maths at A level.

Your next steps...

An A Level in Further Maths is valuable in itself, as well as being a supporting subject to other courses at degree level, in particular Physics and Engineering. Further Maths is required to be able to to study Maths at the top universities.

You could go into a job related to Mathematics such as engineering (civil, mechanical etc), accountancy, finance, actuarial work, among many others.

Studying A2 Further Maths will help you to further develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across business and industry are looking for.
