Course Summary
Mathematics is an essential discipline for the modern world in which solving problems, dealing with data and applying logic are a constant challenge. Mathematics is a demanding but interesting course that builds on the work you have met at GCSE, but also involves many new ideas. It is useful as a support for many areas of study and enhances learning in a number of other subjects at both AS/A2 and higher levels.
Course Details
During an A Level in Mathematics you will:
• Use mathematical skills and knowledge to solve problems
• Solve quite complicated problems by using mathematical arguments and logic
• Understand and demonstrate what is meant by proof in mathematics
• Simplify real-life situations so that you can use mathematics to show what is happening and what might happen in different circumstances
• Use the mathematics that you learn to solve problems that are given to you
in a real-life context
• Use calculator technology and other resources effectively and appropriately; understand its limitations and when it is inappropriate to use such technology

Grade 6 or above in GCSE Maths.

An A Level in Maths is valuable itself as well as being a supporting subject to many courses at A Level and degree level. In particular Physics, Chemistry and Computer Science, but also Biology and the Social Sciences. The could lead onto a university course in Mathematics or related areas such as Engineering, Economics, Physics or more general degree courses.
